Fit problems are one of the biggest reasons dog braces slip, rotate, rub, or get returned. The solution starts before the brace arrives: measure the actual leg.
For the NobleHound dog hock brace, record three measurements while your dog is standing:
- circumference above the hock;
- circumference below the hock; and
- vertical brace height.
Do not choose a size from breed or body weight alone.
What you need
- a soft measuring tape;
- your phone or a note card for recording numbers;
- a non-slip standing surface;
- a helper, if your dog moves easily; and
- the current NobleHound size chart.
If you do not have a soft tape, use a non-stretch string and compare it with a ruler. Do not pull the string tight enough to compress the leg.
First, confirm that you are measuring the hock
The hock is the angled joint on the lower rear leg above the paw. The knee sits higher, closer to the body. NobleHound is not a knee or front-leg brace.

Measurement 1: above-hock circumference
With your dog standing naturally, place the tape around the leg at the point shown above the hock in the NobleHound size diagram. Keep the tape level and in contact with the fur without pulling it tight.
Record the measurement in the same unit used by the size chart. Measure twice. If the two results differ, reposition the tape and take a third measurement.
Measurement 2: below-hock circumference
Move the tape to the specified point below the hock. Again, keep it level and snug against the fur without compressing the leg.
This lower measurement matters because a dog’s rear leg tapers. A brace selected from only the upper circumference can be too loose below the joint and more likely to shift.
Measurement 3: brace height
Measure vertically between the upper and lower points shown in the size guide. This confirms that the brace body matches the length of your dog’s lower leg.
A brace that is too tall can interfere with nearby joints or sit in the wrong position. One that is too short may not center over the intended hock area.
Compare all three numbers
Do not select a size because one measurement matches. Compare the above-hock circumference, below-hock circumference, and height together.

Common measuring mistakes
Measuring while the dog is lying down
Leg shape and tissue position change. Unless the chart says otherwise, use a natural standing position.
Pulling the tape too tightly
You are measuring the leg, not simulating strap tension. A compressed measurement can push you toward a size that is too small.
Measuring fur instead of maintaining light contact
On a long-haired dog, press the tape gently through the coat until it contacts the fur close to the leg. Do not tighten enough to indent the tissue.
Choosing from weight or breed
Weight does not describe lower-leg circumference or length. Dogs of the same breed and weight can need different sizes.
Measuring the wrong joint
The rear hock is below the knee. A perfect measurement at the wrong body location still leads to the wrong product.
Recheck when the brace arrives
Before fastening, hold the brace against the leg and confirm that it centers over the hock without covering the knee or paw. Fasten evenly and begin with a short, supervised session.

Save your measurements
Write down the date, leg measured, and all three numbers. If your dog’s body condition, swelling, or leg shape changes, remeasure before relying on the previous size.

Can I measure only one rear leg?
Measure the leg that will wear the brace. If you are comparing both sides, record each separately because they may not be identical.
Should I add extra room to the measurement?
Use the actual measurement and follow the current size chart. Do not add or subtract an allowance unless NobleHound’s instructions specifically tell you to.
What if my dog is between sizes?
