The word “hock” is unfamiliar to many dog owners. It becomes especially confusing when search results mix hock braces, knee braces, rear-leg sleeves, splints, and lifting harnesses on the same page.

Here is the simple version: the hock is the angled joint on the lower rear leg, above the paw and below the knee. It is often compared with the human ankle.

Knowing that location helps you describe what you see to your veterinarian and prevents you from buying support for the wrong joint.

How to find the hock

Stand beside your dog and look at one rear leg from the side. Start at the paw and trace the leg upward. The first obvious joint that angles toward the back is the hock.

The hock should not be confused with:

  • the paw, which contacts the ground;
  • the knee or stifle, which is higher and closer to the body;
  • the hip, where the rear leg joins the pelvis; or
  • the carpus, the wrist-like joint on a front leg.

A rear-hock brace should wrap the lower back leg around the hock area. If a brace needs to sit over the knee, it belongs to a different product category.

Why the hock-versus-knee distinction matters

The knee contains the cranial cruciate ligament, commonly called the CCL and often compared with the human ACL. A hock brace sits below that joint. It cannot reach through the leg and stabilize a torn ligament in the knee.

What owners can observe safely

You do not need to diagnose the problem to give your veterinarian useful information. Note:

  • when you first noticed the change;
  • whether it began suddenly or gradually;
  • which leg appears affected;
  • whether your dog bears weight on it;
  • whether there is visible swelling, a wound, or an unusual angle; and
  • whether the change is worse after rest or activity.
