New limping, sudden inability to bear weight, swelling, an obvious injury, worsening weakness, or significant pain needs veterinary attention. A brace should not be used to guess at the cause of a gait change.

How to choose the right hock brace

Use these five checks before buying:

  1. Confirm the body location. The product should clearly state that it is for the rear hock below the knee.
  2. Match the support type. A soft wrap and a rigid splint do different jobs. Do not treat those terms as interchangeable.
  3. Look for a complete size chart. A useful chart should require leg measurements, not only breed or body weight.

How to measure for a dog hock brace

What should a good first fit look like?

The brace should sit over the rear hock rather than creeping up toward the knee. Fasten the straps evenly so the brace feels secure without being cranked down at one point. Your dog’s paw should remain warm and normally colored, and the brace should not immediately change the gait or cause distress.

Begin with a short, supervised session. Watch for rotation, slipping, rubbing, chewing, unusual paw temperature, or a change in movement. Remove and reassess if any of those occur.

Why do hock braces slip?

Slipping can come from the wrong size, incorrect height, placement above or below the intended area, uneven strap tension, dirty silicone, or the shape and movement of an individual dog’s leg. Tightening harder is not always the answer and can create a comfort problem.
