
A dog hock brace and a dog knee brace are not two names for the same product. They support different joints at different heights on the rear leg.
The fastest way to separate them is anatomical:
- Hock brace: lower rear leg, around the ankle-like joint above the paw.
- Knee brace: higher rear leg, around the stifle closer to the body.
Choosing by the phrase “back-leg brace†alone can lead to the wrong product.
What does a hock brace support?
A soft hock brace wraps around the lower rear leg and provides adjustable external support around the hock. It should sit below the knee.

It does not cross or stabilize the knee.
What does a knee brace support?
A knee brace is designed for the stifle, the joint higher on the rear leg. Depending on the dog and clinical need, veterinary knee orthotics may use hinges or other structures that control movement around that joint.
The cranial cruciate ligament—usually called the CCL in dogs and often compared with the human ACL—is located in the knee. If your dog has a suspected or diagnosed CCL problem, a hock brace is not a substitute for a knee orthotic, surgery, rehabilitation, or veterinary care.
Why search results blur the categories
Marketplace listings often combine popular phrases such as “hock,†“knee,†“ACL,†“CCL,†and “back leg.†Those combinations may attract traffic, but they do not make the products anatomically interchangeable.
Before evaluating claims, look at the product photos. Where does the brace actually sit? If it wraps the lower angled joint above the paw, it is a hock product. If it spans the knee higher up the leg, it is a knee product.

Which brace does my dog need?
Start with the joint, not the product:
- Observe which rear leg appears affected.
- Note whether the change is sudden, worsening, painful, or associated with swelling.
- Ask your veterinarian to identify the affected structure.
- Choose support designed for that location and purpose.
Do not use a brace as a diagnostic test. If your dog suddenly cannot bear weight, has obvious pain or swelling, or is getting worse, seek veterinary assessment. Cornell University and the MSD Veterinary Manual both emphasize that lameness has many possible causes and requires localization of the problem.
A hock brace is the wrong choice when…
- the affected area is the knee, hip, paw, spine, or front leg;
- the goal is to stabilize a torn ACL/CCL;
- your dog needs lifting assistance from a sling or harness;
- a veterinarian has prescribed a rigid splint or custom orthotic; or
- the cause of a new limp is unknown and needs assessment.

Can a hock brace stabilize a torn ACL or CCL?
No. The ACL/CCL is in the knee, which sits above the hock. A soft hock brace does not stabilize that ligament.

It is a common plain-language description because the hock is comparable to the human ankle. Confirm that the product is designed for the lower rear leg.
What if I cannot tell which joint is affected?
